Born Diego
Armando Maradona and perhaps known to the world by the the Hand
of God and to his countrymen as el 'Diego' is the
stocky football genius credited with single-handedly winning
the 1986 World Cup. With exceptional skills evident from his
early teens he is one of the greatest sportsmen this planet have
seen on a football pitch. Maradona was barely 12 years old when
he said on TV that his greatest ambition was in his own words
''to play in the world cup and be a champion''. He would
go on to fulfill this great ambition and even more. To his fellow
countrymen Maradona was not just a man but a football God and
they would identify with him.
Maradona's
professional football career started shortly after a trial match
in which a coach amazed by his footballing skills assumed he
was hiding his age. Being from the ghettos of Buenos Aires he
would be true to his roots and play for Boca Juniors, a club
for the unprivileged and poor. Unlike many professional players
he is also a die hard fan and has his greatest passion in Boca
Juniors. More to the evidence, on a recent footage he is seen
wearing Boca's shirt to chant, shout and at times frustrated
on watching them play their arch rivals, River Plate.
Maradona's
footballing career had more than the usual share of the ups and
downs but his passion for football is probably the greatest addiction.
For many who grew up watching him play for Boca, Barcelona and
later Napoli he is the greatest of the greatest of them all.
There has simply never been any player matching his individual
skills in all world cups after 1986.
To this
even the English have recently voted his second goal of 1986
against England as the greatest goal ever . He was also voted
by fans on FIFA's internet site to recieve the ultimate FIFA
accolade in Rome along with Pele for been the Greatest Players
of the 20th century.
